PERSONAL STATEMENT
I am applying for Business Management as I am driven to succeed and enjoy facing challenges. I know that by studying this course, not only will I gain a qualification, but I will improve my knowledge and strengthen my ability to flourish within a workplace. I haven’t always been around the dynamics of business; it was only when I was a teenager that I was inspired and learnt the complexities of managing a business. My first job was in hospitality where I worked in a bagel shop. As it was a small company, I frequently met the owner and operations director. I was inspired by their quick thinking and ability to solve problems in a professional manner. The idea of constant new challenges and solving them influenced me to be more interested in managing and learning the legalities of a business.
My competitive nature, alongside my natural communication skills, makes me enjoy working with and against other people. Working as a team I find it easy to quickly work out everyone's strengths and weaknesses in order for us to work effectively together. I have used and developed these skills throughout my time in education, whether it be in: group projects, playing in the basketball, netball and rounders teams or helping organising extracurricular activities, like the student leadership team. By doing these things it has allowed me to establish my leadership skills while also enjoying and thriving within a team. I enjoy taking the forefront role with a level-headed and compassionate approach, although I love listening to and being inspired by others.
I am currently studying Events Management where I find myself not only enhancing the management skills I already have, but using them in real life events. My friend and I organised our own gig in January 2020. We hired out a venue, organised DJs and promoted the event. We reached the venue's capacity of 100 with a queue still outside. This type of real life practice is unlike any you would learn in a classroom. We worked well together as a team and learned from one other instead of one of us just taking charge. I found I work extremely well under pressure when working towards the multiple deadlines that come with organising events. I discovered my realistic but optimistic approach allowed me to put on such a successful event. Although real life events had to stop for the rest for 2020, I haven’t let this stop me from progressing and learning on my course. I started running a joint successful marketing and brand campaign with my own personal blog and podcast. This allows me to continue working and doing what I love, whilst also improving and advancing my computer skills. With the use of Illustrator I have been able to pick up graphic design skills.
On top of my Event Management course I have taken up AQA level 3 mathematics. I enjoy the satisfaction of solving a maths problem whilst also developing my mathematical skills. My ability to unpack maths questions into a way I understand and can solve them not only allows me to do well on my course, but improves my real-life problem solving. This is a skill that I pride myself on and use frequently in everyday life to solve small and large problems. I recently started running as a hobby, and the determination and perseverance I use when solving mathematical problems or issues within the workplace has led me to be able to improve my athletic abilities drastically.
Business management is a genuine passion of mine and I look forward to progressing at university. After my undergraduate studies, I plan to specialise in Events Management and later on starting my own events company. I am eager to engage with the competitive field of business further, and step up to the challenge of being a woman in business.
