RESEARCH
Podcast
I wanted to start my research by looking into how to make a good podcast. As I've never made a podcast before I wanted to know the basics before I took inspiration from other podcasts. I searched on google and found this website.
https://www.thepodcasthost.com/planning/podcast-tips/
The first tip was to define 'What does success look like to me?' Is it number of views, selling a product, making people laugh or just getting my name out there? After working out what I deemed and successful, I should base the way I make my podcast around this to therefore be successful. I thought about this for a while and decided that my idea of success is to impress the people around me. As this project is for college, I don't mind about the number of views as long as the people who do listen, enjoy it. To do this, after each podcast is released I will ask my friends and peers if they enjoyed it, if it was too long or just a bit boring. By doing this each week I should be making content that my audience will enjoy.
The next tip that I found useful is 'Make it sustainable.' As this project is lasting over the next couple of months, I shouldn't set the standards of each podcast extremely high. This won't be achievable to produce at the rate I want to put the podcasts out. Using my pilot episode as an example I can now plan how long it takes me to record and edit each podcast. I also need to factor in when my friends are available to record and if they're not available make sure I have a backup. If I find this too hard to manage I should revaluate the rate at which I am releasing podcasts.
I now wanted to research popular podcasts. Instead of searching on google, I decided to ask my friends, I thought this would give me an accurate idea of what is popular within my target audience. I put a question on my instagram stories and these were the replies.

Hotboxin' with Mike Tyson

The receipts podcast
This podcast is hosted by Mike Tyson. He has a different guest each week where he interviews them. They are smoking weed whilst discussing the topic of conversation. This creates a target audience towards people who also smoke weed, as they relate to whats going on.
I liked that there was a video as I find sometimes with podcasts I just find myself looking at a wall for an hour. I think as my podcast progresses I would like to add video. Not only will this add to my podcast it will also expand the audience as it will be available on more platforms.
The receipts podcast is hosted by 3 young women from London called; Audrey, Tolly and Milena. It is a casual podcast with no specific theme to each episode, however the flow of the conversation is so natural they don't need a theme. As it is hosted by women near to my own age, I find I relate and understand the conversations they are having. It almost feels as if I could be there. As they are from the south of England as well I found their humour was very similar to my own.
There is no video to the podcast but I found it wasn't necessary as their voices and conversation are interesting enough there is no need for visuals. I thoroughly enjoyed this podcast. The research of this podcast has taught me that idea of having a casual conversation podcast works extremely well if executed correctly. I want my podcast to have to same friendly flow as theirs.
BFFS

BFFs podcast is hosted by two guys called Dave Portnoy and Josh Richards. There is a clear big age difference however the duo seems to work. Dave does majority of talking, being very controversial, and Josh brings in the younger sex appeal. Josh lives in LA and Dave in New York so they record over video chat. This gave me the idea of doing this with my podcasts as I could record no matter the COVID restrictions.
Josh is a big tiktoker so the main topic of conversation is tiktok beef. Dave asks brutal questions to the guests to get the insight. This brings excitement to the podcast as its new gossip that fans may have not heard before. I like the idea of this as it brings in listeners as they want to learn the ins and outs of their favourite tik tokers lives. The target audience of this podcast is for tiktok users/ people who are aware of the big names on tiktok.
